Jhulan Jatra
Jhulan Jatra or Jhulan Yatra is a religious festival of the Hindus, especially the believers of Lord Krishna. It is a celebration of the joy of Lord Krishna enjoying swing rides with Radha in the month of Shravana. The
month of Shravana is wet and sultry. It is said that by swinging on a swing one
can actually create some breeze to stay cool. So this festival where the
followers arrange for such a relief for the Lord.
The celebration is a five day affair which starts on the Ekadasi or the eleventh day from the beginning of a Lunar fortnight and ends on the Shravani Purnima (full moon day of Shravana). Households decorate their houses with idols, usually made of clay, depicting various stages in the life of Lord Krishna.
Once this was a very popular practice in Kolkata, but the practice is fast disappearing from the Kolkata households. (More)
