Tram Ride from Shyambazar to BBD Bag along Chitpur Road
|
It was the beginning of the rainy season in Kolkata. It just happened that I had some free time and was strolling down Shyambazar area when I found a tram leaving its depot. It was one of those newly revived, fiber glass molded ones. It was heading for B.B.D. Bag via Chitpur Road. I got onto for a trip down the oldest road in the oldest form of mass transport in Kolkata.
Chitpur Road is the oldest of recorded roads in Kolkata and was used by the pilgrims from the Northern fringes of the old city and beyond for pilgrimages to the Temple of Kali at Kalighat. This road also saw history as some of the most well known Bengali families of the early periods made the areas around this road their residences. So you will have the Tagores, Mullicks, and all others at stone throwing distances from the road. For those interested in history of Kolkata, a trip along this road is a rewarding experience.
